Koa Bug Pin

The koa bug is an endemic Hawaiian insect that is known for its vibrant colors and iridescence. Koa bugs can be found on ‘a‘ali‘i and koa trees across the main Hawaiian Islands.

Made in collaboration with Saxony Charlot @autochthonus_hawaii and the Laulima Nature Center.

Koa is an endemic Hawaiian tree that helps other plants grow by producing nitrogen fertilizer. Koa wood is popular for making furniture and instruments, though historically it was also used for wa‘a (canoes) and papa he‘e nalu (surfboards).
