The Story Behind the Design:
The artwork behind the print was inspired by a trip to the Hakalau Forest National
Wildlife Refuge, on Hawaiʻi Island. This lush forest of koa and ʻōhia is full of native bird
song. Its evolution from grazed ranch land back into vital habitat for native Hawaiian
plants and birds found nowhere else on earth is the result of decades of work by
countless volunteers, a small but mighty crew of full-time staff, and the vision of donors
and birders who believe in safeguarding the future of these unique and remarkable
lands and species.
Pictured in this print are the ʻakiapōlā’au and Hawaiʻi ʻakepa, in their habitat of koa and
ʻōhia trees, with the lichen koa umi covering their branches. These critically
endangered bird species find a safe home in the Hakalau Forest NWR.
